Mental and physical health
When talking about matters of health, avoid judgemental language and do not make assumptions.
For example:
✔ Perfectionism might lead you to believe you that your value comes from your achievements alone.
✘ If you are a perfectionist you likely learned early in life that you were valued mainly for your achievements.
✔ If you experience symptoms of depression, our counsellors can help you.
✘ If you are suffering from depression, our counsellors can help you.
A useful resource for respectful terms relating to mental and physical health can be found on Readability Guidelines.
For further advice on avoiding ableist language you can read the Anti-ableism framework with the Disability section of A Progressive's Style Guide.
