Writing to widen participation

The guidance in this section will help you write in an inclusive and respectful way. Inclusive writing means that no reader is excluded by the language choices we make. As best as we are able, we write without judgement or prejudice and make no assumptions about what is best for our users.

Refer to your reader as 'you' rather than 'students' or 'applicants'.

If you have named the University or your team already on a page, you can use 'we' or 'us' in subsequent references to the same.

This makes content clearer, easier to read and more engaging.

You can read about how to write in plain English in this guide from the Plain English Campaign.
